There are many marathons taking place all over the world every year, but none quite as fun to run as Jamaica’s unique Reggae Marathon! Whether you go in for the 10km race, the half-marathon or the full marathon itself, this will be a run you will never forget.
Why Reggae Marathon? Because huge sound systems and live bands pulse out vibrant reggae beats at every mile to keep you coasting along with a smile on your face and the energy of the music coursing through your body. The run takes place along the gorgeous shoreline, with the start and finish line at Long Bay Beach Park, which boasts one of the world’s top beaches and perfect blue ocean. Forget padding along grey city streets, this is a run in a real paradise.
The marathon has been included in the top-ten marathon events list three times, not only for its quality as a running event but also as a special cultural taste of Jamaican life. It is IAAF certified, and each year attracts top athletes as well as charity fundraisers, making it just as prestigious as any big city run. If the event has caught your attention and you want to help out, there are many great volunteering opportunities offering the chance to do something really worthwhile.
If you aren’t running yourself but have come to the beautiful island to show your support, there is also plenty to do. The town of Negril where the run takes place is transformed into a hub of activity and high spirits, and tourists and locals alike flock to enjoy the event. Come along to the famous gourmet Pasta Party, and try some tasty dishes. The three day long Marathon Expo is also a must see, to really get you in the sporting spirit. There is also the chance to see lots of traditional Jamaican arts and crafts, and get a real sense of the cool culture of this sun-kissed country. And at the end of the race there’s the wild Victory Party, so make sure you pace yourself and save some energy for it!
The 2011 Jamaica Reggae Marathon is set to start on the3rd of December, so you have plenty of time left to book your flights to Jamaica, and get in shape for the run or the beach! With summer sun all year round, this is the perfect location for a really special event.
Sounds like the Reggae Marathon might even be more fun than the Rock N Roll Marathon! I’d love to check it out someday.
